Yemi Alade, a renowned Nigerian musician, has opened up about why she often doesn’t receive awards despite her success and recognition in the music industry.
In an interview with WithinNigeria, she revealed that one of the main reasons for this is her refusal to engage in sexual activities with organizers of award events. According to her, many entertainment executives have approached her with requests for sex, promising her better opportunities in return.
Despite facing pressure to compromise her values, Yemi Alade remains steadfast in her decision to maintain her dignity and integrity. She expressed that she has no regrets about turning down such advances, as she values her principles and the support of her devoted fans.
Yemi Alade further elaborated that in the past, succumbing to such requests seemed like a necessary step to access certain platforms, secure deals, and even win awards.
However, she made a conscious decision to prioritize her principles over short-term gains, even if it meant missing out on certain opportunities.
Ultimately, Yemi Alade’s refusal to engage in sexual activities for personal gain has led to some doors being closed for her in the industry. However, she remains resolute in her stance and continues to focus on her music career with integrity and determination.
“There was a time in the industry when everyone wanted to sleep with me and it was like, ‘Yemi, if you don’t do this, you won’t have that. Today men are the reason I don’t win awards in Nigeria,” she said.
