States Insecurity: 16 state governors back establishment of state police

Sixteen state governors have expressed their support for establishing state police to the National Economic Council.

The reports were received at the 140th NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. The governors recommended changes to the constitution to allow for the creation of state police. No details were given about the specific states, but the total number will be presented at the next NEC meeting as the compilation is ongoing.

This move aligns with the position previously reiterated by governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and supported by regional socio-political groups like Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Middle Belt Forum, and the Northern Elders’ Forum, who have called for state police as a solution to the country’s security challenges.

Insecurity in Nigeria is very high. Whatever they can do to reduce it they should do it. If state police is going to help then good to go
