Real Madrid have completed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a two-year contract, the Spanish giants announced on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old joins the La Liga club after bringing an end to a highly successful nine-year spell at Manchester City. Silva’s contract with Real Madrid will keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until June 30, 2028.
Silva leaves City as one of the club’s most decorated players of the modern era. Since arriving from Monaco in 2017, he made 459 appearances, scoring 76 goals and playing a key role in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
During his time at the Etihad Stadium, Silva won 15 major trophies, including four consecutive Premier League titles between 2021 and 2024. He was also instrumental in City’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2023, which included the UEFA Champions League title. In the 2018/19 season, he helped the club secure all four domestic trophies, cementing his status as a fan favourite.
His arrival marks another significant move in Real Madrid’s rebuilding efforts following two trophyless seasons. Earlier this month, newly re-elected club president Florentino Pérez appointed José Mourinho as head coach in a bid to restore the club’s dominance both domestically and in Europe.
Madrid have also been active in the transfer market, announcing on Monday the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal reportedly worth €55 million ($63.8 million).
With the additions of Silva and Cucurella, Real Madrid are signalling their intent to challenge strongly for major honours in the upcoming season.
