Gov. Seyi Makinde copies Lagos government, bans the use of takeaway packs

The Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, has taken decisive action to ban the use of styrofoam for food services, storage, and related purposes. This move, announced by the state Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, during the Food Safety Stakeholders Forum, reflects the government’s commitment to upholding food safety standards.

Ajetunmobi emphasized the importance of prevention in safeguarding public health, stating, “Prevention is better and cheaper than cure; hence the need for people to adhere strictly to food standards to save lives in the state.” This ban on styrofoam aligns with efforts to mitigate the risk of food poisoning and other health hazards associated with improper food handling and packaging.

To enforce this ban effectively, the state government has inaugurated a task force tasked with implementing the prohibition across Oyo State. This proactive measure underscores the government’s determination to ensure the availability of wholesome edibles for public consumption.

In addition to addressing immediate health concerns, the ban on styrofoam also aligns with broader environmental objectives, echoing recent initiatives such as Lagos State’s ban on single-use plastics aimed at mitigating climate change concerns.

Ajetunmobi further highlighted the Directorate of Food, Water, and Laboratory Services’ role in regulating food business operations and monitoring compliance with food safety standards. He reiterated, “The use of Styrofoam for food services, storage, and other related usage in the state is also banned,” underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting public health and environmental sustainability.
