After 2 years, Reps to resume in a newly-renovated chamber, extends vacation by extra 1 week

After a two-year renovation period, the House of Representatives is preparing to resume sessions in its newly renovated green chamber, according to sources at PREMIUM TIMES.

During discussions on the lawmakers’ WhatsApp platform on Thursday, there was a consensus in favour of resuming activities in the refurbished chamber, as many members expressed fatigue with the temporary setup.

To allow contractors to complete the final touches on the chamber, it was agreed to extend the legislative holiday by one week, delaying the resumption from April 16 to April 23.

The House Clerk, Yahaya Danzaria, was instructed to issue a circular announcing the postponement.

The decision was confirmed by the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi (APC, Ekiti).

Renovation work on the chamber commenced around April 2022, and since then, lawmakers have been using an alternative chamber in a committee room.

In 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari approved N37 billion for the renovation of the National Assembly Complex, a decision that sparked public outcry.

However, due to budgetary adjustments prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the allocation for the renovation project was reduced to N9 billion, with work to be carried out in phases.

PREMIUM TIMES also reported exclusively that the contract for the complex’s rehabilitation was awarded to Visible Construction Limited for N42 billion, covering architectural, mechanical, and electrical renovations.
