Assistant Professor Uju Anya from Pennsylvania State University sparked online conversations after announcing her engagement to her lesbian partner on Twitter (now known as X). She shared a video clip of the proposal, which took place in the presence of their children.
In a series of tweets accompanying the video, Uju revealed that her partner had deceived her into thinking they were attending a friend’s party. However, upon arrival, she was pleasantly surprised by the proposal surrounded by love, their children, and friends. Uju expressed her joy at saying “Yes” to her partner and thanked everyone for their well wishes, promising to share clearer pictures from the proposal.

The news of the engagement stirred a buzz online, with some members of the Igbo community expressing disapproval and considering her actions a disgrace to their tribe. Negative comments flooded social media, with individuals criticizing the couple’s relationship and condemning same-sex unions.
In a separate incident, gay rights advocate Bisi Alimi shared his thoughts on a report about Pope Francis allowing priests to bless same-sex marriages. Alimi commended the progressive move by the priests and highlighted the contrast between the Pope’s acceptance of same-sex unions and the conservative views prevalent in Nigeria, where homosexuality is often condemned as morally wrong.
He questioned how individuals reconcile their beliefs against same-sex relationships with the Pope’s stance on the matter.
