“The Federal Government has allocated ₦12.7 billion from the ₦40 billion mass metering project to provide meters in Army barracks nationwide,” announced the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser, Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister, conveyed this information in a statement released in Abuja on Monday.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the metering exercise at the Headquarters of the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja Military Cantonment, Adelabu emphasized the phased approach of the exercise, with the Ikeja cantonment being the inaugural phase. “The current phase of the exercise will span six weeks before proceeding to the second phase,” he added.
Adelabu underscored the objective of the mass metering initiative in army formations nationwide, stating, “The aim is to facilitate accurate billing and ease collections, thereby eliminating estimated billing.” He highlighted the alignment of this initiative with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda to ensure consistent electricity supply to military establishments nationwide, emphasizing the priority placed on ensuring public utilities, especially electricity, are readily available to the armed forces.
“The smart meters being installed are tamper-proof and will deter energy theft,” Adelabu noted. “Additionally, customers will have access to an app for monthly consumption statements.” He also mentioned the integration of grid and off-grid solar power supply to address energy needs in military barracks, particularly those in remote areas without grid access.
Furthermore, Adelabu reiterated the commitment to extend the metering project to all military formations in the country with the objective of providing 24-hour power supply to the barracks. “The second phase of the project would commence simultaneously in Abuja and Enugu, benefiting military formations across the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) territories,” disclosed Ashade Olatunbosun, CEO of De Haryor Global Services.
Expressing gratitude for the metering initiative, Maj.-Gen. A Adetuyi, Commander of the 9th Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja, emphasized the urgency of addressing longstanding challenges with erratic power supply and estimated billing. “We have tried to resolve this and we have even involved the state government without any result,” Adetuyi noted. “We also discovered that we were always being given estimated bills, though we would not have minded if power supply was regular.”
