The Police in Edo State, South-south Nigeria, have apprehended three individuals suspected of involvement in a staged kidnapping, including a woman who allegedly orchestrated her own abduction in exchange for N4.8 million.
According to a statement released by the police spokesperson in the state, Chidi Nwabuzor, on Monday, the arrest was made possible through “technical intelligence.” The woman identified as Blessing Ogunu, who works at Bliss Legacy Limited in Benin City, confessed to devising the scheme after her company refused to allocate land to a customer from whom they had already received payment.
The other suspects involved in the incident are Esther Anthony and Ukpebor Joel. Following interrogation, Blessing Ogunu admitted to orchestrating her own kidnapping to pressure her company into fulfilling the land allocation.
Mr. Nwabuzor stated that the suspects will soon face charges in court. This incident adds to the growing trend of individuals in Nigeria faking their own kidnappings to extort ransom money from their relatives.
In a similar case earlier in March, the police in Akwa Ibom State arrested a woman for staging her own kidnapping. The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, Waheed Ayilara, disclosed that the woman conspired with her boyfriend and three others to orchestrate the fake kidnapping in order to solicit a N4 million ransom from her aunt, who resides outside the country.
This trend of fake kidnappings for financial gain has been on the rise, as evidenced by a previous report in August where a 28-year-old man from Delta State allegedly staged his own kidnapping to extort money from his family members. Such incidents highlight the need for vigilance and thorough investigation by law enforcement agencies to combat this criminal activity.

He be like say na the new update be this..nawa o.
I get this woman is fighting for her own personal gain with the company, but she should have done it in a legal way
She could have done it a better way
The fact that the next thing she thought about was faking a kidnap is disturbing
Money is a necessity, it’s something we all need and want , it’s never enough. Which is why we go about getting it in different way and means .most of these people might have tried the right and and has gotten no reply , maybe heard somewhere that they could fake a kidnap and decided to try it .
Although no reason is right to dupe people of 4 million naira but we are not to judge anyone without knowing the full back story
9ja with new scopes everyday 😂
How can the thought of defrauding your family even cross your mind? Is money that important? More important than your family?
