Nigeria’s organized labour, represented by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has rejected the federal government’s proposed minimum wage of N48,000. TUC Vice President Mr. Etim Okon confirmed their attendance at the upcoming negotiation meeting but emphasized their disapproval.
“The proposal falls significantly short of meeting our needs and aspirations,” Okon stated. He further criticized the government’s lack of transparency, highlighting their failure to provide data justifying the proposed amount.
“They did not show us how they arrived at that amount,” Okon said. “We believe the government should come out clearly with what they are offering, including the indices and variables used to reach this figure.”
Organized labour previously submitted a proposal for a N615,000 minimum wage, which they will reiterate at the upcoming meeting. Okon emphasized that their initial proposal wasn’t rejected, but rather their response to the government’s counteroffer.
The key point here is the demand for transparency. Labour wants the government to justify their proposed wage by explaining the underlying calculations and data used. They maintain their original proposal of N615,000 and are prepared to negotiate further.
