NALDA Boosts Food Security Efforts with Targeted Distribution of Agricultural Inputs

In a move aimed at bolstering national food production, the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) recently distributed agricultural inputs to 1,000 farmers across Nasarawa and Lagos States.

This initiative forms part of a wider strategy to enhance crop yields and ensure food security for Nigeria’s growing population.

NALDA ensured a targeted approach by distributing inputs specific to each state’s agricultural strengths. Lagos State farmers, known for their maize cultivation, received NALDA-branded maize seeds. Nasarawa State farmers, specializing in beans, were provided with corresponding bean seeds.

Beyond seeds, the distribution included essential supplies like herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers. These combined elements have the potential to significantly boost yields, with estimates suggesting an increase of up to six tons of produce per farmer.

Transparency and Collaboration

NALDA prioritized transparency by capturing beneficiary biometrics during the distribution process. This measure ensures the support reaches genuine farmers who can put the resources to good use.

Collaboration also played a key role. In Lagos, the distribution to 500 farmers from the East Senatorial District benefited from a partnership with Senator Mikail Adetokunbo Abiru.

Alignment with National Goals

NALDA’s Executive Secretary, Prince Paul Ikone (represented by ICT Director Chima Onuha), emphasized how this initiative aligns perfectly with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.” This agenda prioritizes agriculture and food security, with the distribution program directly addressing the recently declared state of emergency on food security.

NALDA’s efforts extend beyond immediate yield increases. The program aims to support the President’s initiatives to:

The program also aspires to inspire more Nigerians to embrace agriculture, promoting self-sufficiency and long-term food security for the nation.

One beneficiary, Owolabi Odulaja, expressed his deep appreciation, acknowledging the program’s potential to significantly combat poverty. Looking ahead, the expectation is that within the next three to four months, the program’s outputs will contribute to a noticeable decline in food prices across markets.

NALDA’s targeted distribution of agricultural inputs serves as a promising step towards a more food-secure future for Nigeria.
