SUG GIVES FIFTEEN STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIPS AT ORIENTATION, LEADERSHIP SUMMIT.

On Thursday, the 25th of April, 2024, fifteen students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, became recipients of scholarships at the SUG Orientation and Leadership Summit, which took place at the Assembly Hall, North Campus of the institution.

At the commencement of the programme, the Host, Mr. Makinde John (Dean, Students Affairs) in his welcome address, commended the SUG Executives, led by Com. Oyekan Tobiloba Emmanuel, for organizing the programme. Further, he informed the students present of significant developments that have started in the institution, citing the early conduct of SUG elections as one. He revealed that the school management, in a recently held meeting have concluded that SUG elections be conducted within three weeks after every second semester examination in the school. Thereafter, he declared the programme open.

The SUG President, Comr. Oyekan Tobiloba Emmanuel took turns to appreciate all students and student leaders of the institution who were present at the programme, and in line with the theme of the event, admonished them all to embrace the possibilities in enterprenureship, as it is a powerful source of income.

The first speaker of the day, Mr. Y.B. Wahab, lecturer, Public Administration Department, spoke on the topic; ‘Youth Inclusion in Politics and Governance in Nigeria’. He hammered on the need for youths to be disciplined, as they are the future of the nation and the nation looks to them to bring positive change to governance.
He remarked that; many faults we see in Nigeria’s politics today are as a result of a dented foundation, many years ago.

The second speaker, DPO Sango Police Station, Ibadan; CSP Olatunji Adeshina, speaking on the topic, ‘Security and Sensitization of the Students Community: The Polytechnic, Ibadan and its environs’, he advised that every student always be in their best behavior, because the peace of the Institution guarantees their own peace. He further urged them to desist from cultism and other bad associations. “Your settlement is my priority, and we will always be available to secure the institution. Also remember that the Police is your friend”, he concluded.

The event featured a Raffle draw session where 15 students benefited the full payment of their second semester school fees, courtesy of the sponsors of the programme; Polybadan Microfinance Bank, Verawise, More Monee and Zenith Bank. Meanwhile, one of the scholarships was won earlier by Onoh Chidinma, a student, for volunteering to lead the opening prayer at the start of the event.

Other gift items and cash prizes were given out by Zenith Bank and Verawise, respectively, to students that participated in the tasks given.

The third speaker, Mr G.D. Akinremi, from Business Administration Department spoke on the topic; ‘Excellent Communication Skill: A Key Aspect of your Career Path’.

In his lecture, he stated the importance of having great communication skills – how it can exponentially boost one’s career. He also advised that students should add value to all they are taught in school by getting vocational skills and be innovative. “Think of what you can do with your hand, take calculated risks, not risky risks”, he added.

Present at the event was the Dean FBCS; Dr. Mrs. Kehinde Faniyi, representing the Acting Rector, The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Prof. Taiwo Lasisi, the Dean Students Affairs; Mr. Makinde John, Deputy Registrar, Students Affairs; Mrs Akubtunde, Chief Security Officer duly represented by Mrs. Ifawibe Victoria, CSP Olatunji Adesiyan, DPO Sango Police Station, Ibadan, The Admissions Officer; Dr. Mrs. Olajide Taiwo, Mr. Ogunremi G.D., Mr. Yusuff Bolaji Wahab, student leaders and the student populace of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Closing the event, awards of excellence were given to the guest speakers and the Admission Officer, Dr. Mrs. Olajide Taiwo.
