Nollywood actor Ayoola Ayolola bravely shared his journey to fatherhood, admitting that he once contemplated suicide upon learning he was going to be a father.
He expressed feeling unprepared and depressed at the prospect of catering to someone else’s life. Despite disappointment from his pastor father and feeling like he let everyone down, he realized the blessings in it.
“I was still trying to find my feet and figure out why I was here. I mean I knew why I was here but I was trying to navigate those waters. So now I’m supposed to cater to somebody? Someone’s life can be made or ruined because of me directly?”
Ayolola recounted a harrowing moment when he stood in the middle of a busy road, considering ending his life.
“I felt to myself, ‘What if I just end it right now? You know, nobody is going to miss me.’ I was actually in the middle of the road, and when you’re calculating when to cross, I deliberately miscalculated so that I would be hit. Maybe this is a good idea.”
However, the fear of going to hell stopped him at the last minute.
“But then, I think the fear of if you do it, you go to hell. I don’t want to go to hell. Maybe it was a bad idea. And then something happened that maybe picked up the pace or slowed down a little more, and the car just brushed me. I still fell off the road, and some people came to help me up, not knowing what I tried to, you know…”
Reflecting on the positive aspects of fatherhood, he acknowledged the beautiful life he almost missed out on and the impact of his actions on his son.
“Anyway, all of that happened, and I look back now. I look at the very handsome young man, and I’m like, really? This is what I was about to miss? This is whose life I was about to destroy by my actions? By the action I was about to take, that I was going to take blindly, this little boy would have been made fatherless.”

It can be really hard making such decisions really but like he said when you think of odds of the best or worst that could happen (which many who damn the consequence of wrong decisions don’t consider) I think it’d be clearer and it could even be that it’s that decision that you pushed him to work harder and be a better person so he could be a good example to the little man… I’m proud of you sire.

And those responsibility even though sometimes it’s from our own mistakes are to toughen us and make us better yet we run away and choose to find an easy way out only to meet a greater responsibility ahead which the earlier responsibility could have prepared us for but because we ran away, we tend to break and some even crash any never get it right again…
