“An estimated 700 babies die daily in Nigeria,” said Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, emphasizing the nation’s critical challenge of high maternal and child mortality rates.
Governor Sani, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, highlighted these new facilities as a direct response to the state’s fight against its alarming neonatal mortality rates. He revealed, “Kaduna State has the highest neonatal mortality rate in North West Nigeria.”
Sani continued, “This is the highest number of newborn deaths in Africa and the second highest in the world. Alarmingly, 25% of all neonatal deaths occur on the first day of life, while 75% occur within the first week.”
The newly commissioned neonatal unit focuses on caring for newborns up to 28 days old, providing vital services to ensure the well-being of both mothers and their babies. Governor Sani emphasized, “The oxygen plant construction guarantees a reliable oxygen supply to the newborn unit and other state facilities.”
He concluded by expressing his gratitude for the “crucial technical and financial assistance from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)” for these critical projects.
